Forest schools: Lessons in outdoor education
Forest schools, in which students are instructed outside rather than in classrooms, have become a learning experience for many – and have added benefits in a time of pandemic. Correspondent Conor Knighton visits an immersive forest school in Oregon, where being outdoors all day – even in inclement weather – becomes part of the learning process.

Hooray! I’m so happy to see that you included Sharon Danks from Green Schoolyards America in this piece. Their work to transform asphalt schoolyards into ecologically rich “parks” is so important.
The uptight wren remarkably guard because wound realistically double to a freezing sweets. shallow, mindless loss
Although it’s not quite Outdoor Schools, I’m pretty biased towards Montessori learning. Being outside and learning hands on has a great, positive effect on kids. Why did we forget this when we become adults is beyond me.
interesting
This is awesome.
So you are following the format that many homeschoolers have successfully used for years.
how sad and ridiculous that the kids are being made to wear facemask.
Maybe one thing they could teach first would be that it’s completely unnecessary to wear masks outdoors. You are outside with fresh oxygen produced by the beautiful trees you are surrounded by. BREATH IT IN. Please follow actual science and model smart behavior not blind compliance and fear. Other than that, beautiful learning environment
Students can not only learn from nature but also learn to appreciate and respect nature.
My kids would have loved this type of ‘school’.. they were very active and needed lots of outdoor time which we were able to give them outside of school!!
Thiss is what school should be!!! Turn to Reggio Emilia, Finland etc
Thank you for spreading environment awareness!!!!! ❤️🙏
Best kind of learning
Love & support this "new" methodology for children and adults alike! May it become part of the new American curriculum 🇺🇸❣.
Really, it’s a wonderful modern method of outdoor learning & teaching kids, it helps them bring what they learnt as theories into real life.
This is normal in Europe. Children belong in the nature. It‘s just soooo ridiculous that these poor kids who are outside in the fresh air cannot even enjoy it with the masks – that are for nothing anyway. Oh wait, they symbolize something – how stupid we all are. Forgive me, but literally they do not stop any spread of the virus. What they are doing is spreading another sickness. They maintain the mental trauma we are all willingly putting our children through. Day after day after day. Shame on us all!!! Our children will never be the same again.
One of those is in M3GAN
Madness. Those face nappies. Da fu ck
It’s been demonstrated in studies that kids who do outdoor learning have better immunity. What’s usually not considered in that is how toxic many public buildings are.
Outdoors and wearing masks. Idiocracy. Missing the forest for the trees.
I wonder if Oregon is as bad with mosquitoes in spring as Alaska. They come at you in baseball-sized swarms.
Lots of outdoor options out there. Tinkergarten is in so many 🇺🇲.
"Authentic education," she says while wearing a mask and standing in a stream.
I’m literally obsessed. Being outside is so much more engaging, your brain is working more, it’s more awake and happy and better focused. Its probably cheaper than real schools too, cause you don’t need to build, clean, upkeep, heat the building, meaning you could pay teachers more. Have schools located in forests would also decrease forestry and teach kids a love for nature. Why is the public education system not jumping on this.
I can not believe in nature with a mask what a horrible thing to do
poor kids and what a brain wash can you get
Forest schools are very popular in the UK. Even some top boarding schools have a forest school that students have classes in some of the time. It works really well with young children to keep them active and not stuck in a classroom.
I believe that this environment makes children more receptive to learning.
No piercing intercom. No slamming lockers. No administrators with check boxes. Nice.
Good on Portland Maine Public Schools but does anyone really think that American Teachers Unions would do this en masse? Catholic and Private schools remained upon and remained safe—just as Rand Paul told Fauci last fall. Kids in public schools, especially boys, lost a year of their lives due to the raw exercise of political power by teachers unions.
My nephews went to a public alternative forest school outside of Burlington, VT. It’s been an option for kids for over a decade.
I am a Camp Director for a Nature Based day camp in MA. There are amazing rewards to having staff and children in the outdoors almost all day. And Tony is a creative force in this work! I have had the pleasure of watching Trackers grow over the last several years.
love to see more forest schools in the world
If there are any grade school teachers looking to do something similar, Mt. Baldy School in Southern California is hiring!
As a teacher for one of these programs I can tell you it is strange how effective it is I really don’t know why but you can tell a difference in engagement and retention
omg I would had my kifs in this so fast
children wearing masks… oh dear…
This looks incredible! I live in Oregon, and would love to see this more!
I can’t imagine how wonderfully this will effect these young students
The kids would probably look forward to the next day. I would.
A lot gets done through the efforts of grassroots! Excellent idea. I used to hate being cooped up inside classrooms! Hope more schools are open to the idea!
Wonderful!!!
Outside all day, but still making them wear masks. 🤦🏼♀️
Outdoor classrooms can foster a sense of community and collaboration. They provide opportunities for group projects, teamwork, and social interaction in a natural and relaxed setting.
Normal for many kids in Germany.
Reminds me of my home/outside school
🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
I want to sign up… I grew up in Long Beach Ca and your Sixth grade year and freshman year of High School, you attend a Fall week in Camp Hi Hill. Our school district used to own the property and now its Religious Camp Site. Learned everything about the outdoors there… Good times… Now kids won’t stray far from Wifi..
Outdoor with masks. 🙈What do children ‚learn‘ from this? 🙈🙈🙈
My daughter teaches at one of these schools in WA State and she shares that this type of teaching is awesome. Kids love it! Fresh air and sunshine all day.
Always a female teacher. Boys are doing much worse at school than girls because of the feminization of education.
