  1. I used a $32 Goretex parka from Costco. Worked fine on a light backpacking. And was lighter/compact than my Marmot
I used a Marmot Precip Jacket since 2007. But the inside coating peels off. So I just use it as a wind breaker.

  2. I’ve blown the budget then…

    – Arcteryx Fission SV Jacket 500
    – Arcteryx Covert Cardigan 150
    – Icebreaker Marino base Layers 100
    – Arcteryx Gamma MX trousers 150
    – Lowa Renegade Boots 150
    – Tilley Socks 20
    – Oakley Glasses 600
    – Canada Goose Beanie 250
    – Samsung Smartphone 1500
    – Omega Seamaster Chronograph Watch 11000

    £14,400

  3. i LOVED arcteryx…til they started ripping and coming undone after like a year of owning them…or the very FIRST time i rode my mountain bike and my pants ripped SO easily…never spending money like that on clothes again.

  4. The Eddie Bauer Cloud Cap 2.0 Stretch is an excellent windproof shell with pit zips. Bought mine for $79 – love it!

  5. as somone whos been fairly poor most my life, i can say expensive stuff is pretty good like merino wool, with me polyester doesnt dry fast enough so merino is a must, gortex is nice but def not required.

  6. You cannot scientifically state that a “rain jacket” will work just as well as a GORE-TEX branded jacket when talking about keeping moisture out. It’s not correct. Don’t generalize when sharing information. That can dramatically shift someone’s opinion on the matter for the rest of their gear life.
Then retail employees who are properly trained, look like a bunch of assholes when they try to sell you something that’s MUCH better for you

  7. I just wear Columbia and Under Armour military/hunting/fishing stuff for outdoors clothing. They are a really good middle ground for quality/price. I especially like Under Armours military stuff as it’s all way higher quality then their civilian stuff as far as durability.

  8. Great video. In my country, people that live in the mountains and colder regions walk in plain wool sweaters, jeans and leather jackets, paired with jeans, wool socks and rubber boots. Last time I was hiking, I saw couple of guys, 50/60 year olds, choping wood in the forest. They come, get jacket down, loose the heavy sweater, and start working. When done, they remove shirt, put the sweater directly on the torso, leather jacket over it and go home. Highlanders… In meantime I was changing my Peak performance outer shell, to remove my inner shell… And still feel pretty tired and cold 🥶

  9. Lol i have all sorts of expensive gear , but i buy at yard sales its easy to get good gear if you aren’t lazy

  10. There are many places in this video that can be misleading. One that i noticed very well is when he talked about polyester vs wool.
He said that polyester is better at moving sweat and moisture away from the body, which it is. but he doesn’t mention the fact that when polyester get wet, it loses its heat, meanwhile with wool, it keeps heat even when wet/sweaty.
He gives the facts he wants to give, but not all the facts that should be told.
There is absolutely no reasoning to use polyester over wool as a mid-layer, other than the price. considering the only reason it could get wet is if you’re sweating, and if you’re sweating you shouldnt be wearing a mid layer anyways…
i would go as far as to say that this man is talking rubbish…

  11. Just for info. There is no such thing as breathable and waterproof … even Gore-Tex cant do both, once its wet it doesn’t bread anymore, that’s just the way it is… fabric that can do both at same time don’t exist as far as I know. So next time you have to chose between Gore-Tex or any other breathable/ waterproof system, just pick the cheapest, they pretty much work the same.

  12. The truth about this video is you’ll be purchasing a lot of child labour… at best. TL’DR -do NOT wear cotton. Me personally? All Icebreaker, so that $1200 to me is cheap

  13. But nobody’s talking about temperature ratings. I don’t want to freeze. I need some temperature ratings.

  14. Sorry, but Amazon has become a Chinese knock-off marketplace undermining quality and U.S. businesses. I choose to spend a little more and support American brands.

  15. Your channel is an example of an area of YouTube that I try to entirely avoid. Essentially a modern version of a classic late night TV advertising channel "QVC". And of course you will Shadow ban this comment. Welcome to 2024. 😂

  16. If I had a technology that allowed you to feel warm in -30 degrees Celsius while wearing a raincoat (e.g. GORE-TEX) and keep it breathable and breathable and the technology came with 2000upf and was completely harmless to the human body, and had a cooling effect in high temperature environments, and more importantly the technology was used in a fabric that only cost 2$/meter, would you be willing to buy it?

  17. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing us that something could be both waterproof and breathable in a non-trivial way at the same time.

  18. Excellent informative video. Another smart shopper tip: It’s hit or miss but I do find all these layers at stores like Ross or TJMAXX. Just bought 3 pairs of NF mittens-two that were goretex, and a pair of women’s NF 3L snowboard pants for just over $100 total.

  20. The truth is, Its just a brand like every other piece of clothing, You only pay extra money for a jacket that says arctrix ore north face it dosent make it better… In fact in many cases its only worse.

  21. 33,000 makes a pit-zip rain jacket under $70. I have the under $30 version without the zips, and it works great over a cheap zip up fleece that I use. They have the best fold in collar hoods I have seen.

  22. Hello from Ouray, Colorado!!

My algorithm brought me to your channel as I was looking at puffy jacket videos as I am interested in 1 bag traveling and was interested in a packable jacket to take the nip off.

Well, regardless of how I discovered your channel, I am very happy to arrive to it! This is a really awesome and informative video. Yes…quality outdoor gear can be super expensive. I am going through the same sticker shock for this 1 bag travel concept with regards to merino wool t shirts and collard shirts and such. A quality merino wool t shirt is like $100! But, they allegedly do give the ability wear them multiple times before laundering (in ither words, dont need to carry as many).

QUESTION- does your amazon puffy jacket pack up into a small shell?

Anyways, I live in a winter and summer wonderland here in the San Juan Mountains. So, I look forward to more of your videos. This video is awesome as it provides an affordable way to get out there. When doing training with one of our NATO partners north of the artic circle, in the winter, I was always amazed that, in the middle of the night, during our ski movements with our 100 lbs of equipment in pur pack, we just wore the long johns and a gore tex shell. When we stopped for a break, we instantly had to put on more layers so as not to perish hehehe.

I completely agree that a rain jacket shell can fit the bill for these winter activities. When we were at our home station in North Carolina, and receiving the great southern rain storms, our gore tex would get comepletely soaked and lose its gore tex benefits. And being in a humid area, it can take a half of a day to get the goretex dried out (assuming one is in a tactical environment and cant lay out their clothing on the bushes in the sun).
